The Avon—About half-past 4 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, the Avon began to riso again, but during the ni«ht the fresh received a check, and the waier was not so high eirly yesterday morning as it was when we last observed it overnight, at which time it had risen about eight ineli s. During ye3terda> forenoon it began to rise again and continued to rise fast until the middle of the day, when it attained a depth of about fourteen inches beyond that of its ordinary condition. Towards evening it began to fall again, and at seven o'clock had fallen an inch and a half, and was still falling. The source of the fresh is, as usual, the Waimakariri, which has again come over at the embankment. But although the North road is flooded, there is not much water in the north and south branches of the river j and the discolouration of the Avon is so great for bo moderate a fresh, that grave suspicions are entertained that there is something wrong with the Waimakariri higher up.
