He (the chairman) read an autograph letter from His Excellency addressed to him, stating that he cherished a grateful reme brance of his visit to Canter bury, and that he regretted that hr. should not be able to renew his visit to the province in company with H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh. The Chairman remarked that he thought that the Christchurch City Council ought to frame an address similar to that from the Municipal Council of Hokitika t» be presented to his Excellency. ' It was decided that Messrs Wilson, Duncan and Thomson, be nominated as a committee to draw up an address to his Excellency, expressing their regret at his anticipated departure from the colony. The Chairman stated he yet entertained hopes that Sir George Grey would visit the province in company with H.R.11. the Duke of Edinburgh. The report of the City Surveyor was read and considered. It mentioned the result of the experiments with reference to the five wells near Matheson's Agency, and requested instructions as to the tank proposed to be placed around them. The City Surveyor was called in and was asked his opinion as to the size of the tank and its probable cost. After some discussion it wis decided that J the consideration of the subject should be referred to the Water Supply Committee, in order to obtain further information. It was decided that the Public Works Committee should act in concert with the City Surveyor to put Madras bridge in complete repair as soon as possible. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Bruce and Turner, waited upon the Council with reference to the preparation of Latimer square for the purposes of cricket. The letter from the Provincial Secretary, already alluded to, was again read, with reference to this subject. The Chairman stated that from the information contained in the letters, the Council had power to deal with the squares of the city.

_ Mr Turner stated that the club were desirous of putting up a fence, to be approved by the Council, so as to prevent the passage of vehicles across the ground. The club had expended a large sura in preparing the ground for cricketing purposes, but it bad been cut up by the passage of vehicles and horses, and also by the cavalry practice. If the petitiou of the club were granted, the result would be a great boon to the public, as the ground 60 prepared would be useful as a place of recreation. The club would wish the Council to subsidise them in the under-

taking. The Chairman thought that the ground might be fenced as a place of public recreation, but that the exclusive use of it could not be granted' to the Albion club, although they might be entitled to the priority of occupation. He further remarked that the matter would be considered, and the result of their deliberation would be communicated to the club by letter on the following day. The deputation then withdrew. It was resolred that the City Surveyor should be instructed to prepare as estimate of the cost of a fence suitable for the purposes suggested by the club, so as to prevent the passage of vehicles /mi horses. The applications of Messrs T. D. Jones and C. F. Money, to erect a veranda and a lamp near their premises respectively, were granted subject to the approval of the City Surveyor.

The report of the Inspector of Nuisances was read and considered.

It was mentioned that satisfactory arrangements had been made with reference to the fire gong, and that the points in dispute had been settled. On the motion of Mr Calvert, it was decided that persons having cart roads across footpaths on both sides of Cashel street, from High street to Oxford Terrace, should have the same filled up to the level of the footpath and should substitute bridges across the side channels.
