The steamer which proceeded North on Tuesday, took up the Hon. Mr J. Hyde Harris, the Hon. Mr A. C. Strode, and the Hon. Mr Ernest Gray, to vote for the Government and coerce the small majority which is making a gallaut stand against the measure by which Mr Fitzherbert proposes to give away £300,000 of the taxpayer's money to a few fortunate speculators. Mr Harris has lately been appointed Solicitor-General, Mr Strode receives Government pay as Resident Ma istrate of Dunedin, and Mr Gray is understood to be a large shareholder in the Bank of New Zealand. We hope another session will not pass over without the introduction of a measure which will effectually purge both Houses from the vicious presence ot members who are paid officers of the Government of the colony.
