FLAX VERSUS WHEAT.

TO THE EDITOR OP TKK LTXTELTOK TIMES, . Sir,—ln these days of many suggestions and all sorts of contrivances, I beg to contribute my mite to the general fund. An acre and a ; quarter of land will average <0 bushels of wheat. The present price is 3s per bushel; or, for an acre and a quarter, £6. The expense of producing and realising this will amount to about £6 ss, according to my calculations. - Here is a loss of 5s on the acre and quarter. Now for flax or linseed. Growing for seed, and taking a low average price at home of £1 per cwt, we have £2O per ton. One and a quarter acres will produce a ton. This, delivered in England, would be worth £2O. The cost of growing and realising in the colony would be about £7 10s. Allow £3 10s for freight and charges to England, and we have a clear profit of £9. My figures may be wrong in both cases, I do riot think they are very far out; at all evlnts I shall be glad if you will give them a place in your columns, and encourage correspondence on the subject.

Your: obedient servant, COLONIST. Christchurch, July 23, 1867.
