GENTLEMEN,-I have no hesitation in acceding to the very complimentary requisition you have presented to me. Though new to public life I am not unacquainted either with the politics or commerce of the colony, and shall feel it an honour if, as jour representative. I am permitted to use whatever ability or knowledge I may possess in directing the one and promoting the other. I shall take au early opportunity of explaining my views at length to the electors; in the meantime I may state that— I believe in a "let alone" policy for the Maori race, and shall support any measures calculated to afford them greater facilities for disposing of or dealing with their lands. Believing that the duties of Provincial Governments will cease when the revenues they were created to expend are exhausted, I shall look favourably upon any fair measure which shall prepare the way for a gradual change at the proper time. In the financial settlement which must goon take place between the Colonial and Provincial Governments, I shall endeavour to obtain justice for Canterbury; and I shall strenuously resist all encroachments upon its land fund. The question of consolidating tho debts of the colony, and restricting borrowing powers to the Colonial. Government will receive my best attention.
