COMMERCIAL.

Lyttelton Times Office, Friday Evening. The demand for articles of regular consum, ton is more active, and from tlie bareness of sticks, dealers and shopkeepers are more willing to purchase. Hams and bacon are >till huh, but a recent arrival by the Sir Balpli Aber.-rombie will somewhat relieve the market. Candles have maintained their values until within the last few days, when a small holder, anxious to quit, has forced about 200 boxes upon the market at about 2d per lb. fall. It' gular holders of cundles are still locking for Is 2|d to Is 3d per lb for full weights. Cheese, good English, keeps up, and the supply is limited: Is 3d to Is 4d per lb is the rate quoted. Malt is scarcely so firm, but good samples sell rapidly at 10s per bushel. Bottled stint sidls well at good rates, and stocks are low. Bottled ales are over-done, but Ind, Coope and Co.'s, Al sopp's, Bass', and other favourite brands sell at from 12s to 13s per dozen. Ale in bulk—Bass' E.I. pale is very scarce, and readily saleable, but No. 3 is not e-isily quitted. English soap sells readily at the late advance, Sugars continue very firm, ami the late advices ar°. likely to strengthen prices, 'leas are lightly held, and the advices by the last steimer from Melbourne shew a considerable advance: boxes are very scarce. There is a good business doing in spirits, and an active demand has been shewn for brandy in quarter-casks, as also for Hennessey's in case. Whiskey is more in demand both in case an 1 bulk, and is rather low in stock. Old torn, in bulk, is very barein stock; and, in case, the demand is good. For Geneva there is not so much inquiry. We understand that the exchanges in the neighbouring colonies have fallen half per cent, but the high rates of last mail are still kept by the banks here. There is no alteration in the r.:te of disount. Money is not very plen iful. and, although the bills were fairly met on the 4th inst., still a considerable amount of assistance was required to enable trade bills to he met, We would again call the attention of our representaiivi's to the present state of the law with regard to fraudulent insolvents, as requiring ur ent attention, every day o tiling forth the indignant protests of our merchants, through the severe losses they continually sustain through dishonest traders,
