Election Notices. TO WILLIAM* MONTGOMERY, Esq. WE, the undersigned respectfully request that you will allow yourself to be put in nomination as one of the Representatives of the Heathcote District at the approaching elections of members of the Provincial Council. We are led to make this request, knowing that you are interested in the Heathcote District, and that, from your intimate acquaintance with its requirements (as well as those of the province at large), you are eminently fitted to become its representative in the Council. D. Macpherson, Esq., and the gentlemen who have signed the Requisition : — I BEG o thank you very sincerely for the gratifying requisition presented to me, signed by gentlemen of such influence ; and, in accordance with your wish, I will offer myself as a candidate for the representation of the Heathcote District at the approaching election of members for the Provincial Council. I am in favour of the prosecution of public ■works in the province to the utmost limit that our. finances will warrant; but such public works, in my opinion, should be undertaken only where there is a probability, amounting almost to a certainty, that they will be remunerative, or where imperatively called for to develope the resources of the province ; and I consider the utmost care should at all times be taken to guard against the possibility of a financial difficulty. I am in favour of liberal grants for educational purposes, believing that sound education tends to promote order and self-reliance in a community, assists in the development of the energies and resources of a people, and conduces in an eminent degree towards making men good citizens. I am entirely opposed to any change in our Land Regulations, believing them to be admirably adapted to promote the settlement of an industrious population in the province; and I feel convinced that any change lowering the price of land would so unsettle the value . ~ ~. _ i,_ _i j; i. li._ IJ

of all securities, that disastrous results would surely follow. The clause conferring preemptive rights may require to be modified, so as more clearly to express its meaning, but I am opposed to any departure from the spirit of the present Land Eegulations. I am in favour of a considerable grant to provide free passages for female immigrants of first-class character, suitable to the wants of the province. Gentlemen, such are my views on the most prominent questions of the day. I promise, if I have the honour to be elected, to give earnest attention to my public duties. I will endeavour to do all in my power to secure a just distribution of the public money to all parts of the province ; and as one of the representatives of your district, knowing its wants and requirements, it will be my peculiar duty to see that it has a fair share. I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, 311 W. MONTGOMERY. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE SELWYN DISTRICT.
