He has announced that he will only give two more representations in Christchurch. Licensed Victualler's Association.— The annual fete of this society, will take place at Kohler's gardens, on Wednesday, the 21st inst. A variety of rural sports, to commence at 2 p.m.. will be provided,, and tea will be served in the saloon at 5 p.m. In the evening there will be a ball. Congregational Church.—On Tuesday last, Dr. and Mrs. Foster kindly entertained the children attending the Congregational Church school. About 140 of them were conveyed in vehicles kindly placed at their disposal by some of the coach proprietors of the city. A variety of games was provided for them, into the spirit of which the children entered with great glee. Provincial Council—A public meeting has been called by the Chairman of the City Council for Tuesday evening next, for the purpose of affording the candidates for the Provincial Council for this city an opportunity of declaring their views. The meeting is called in reply to a requisition. The Council is not dissolved yet, and though there are several, candidates forward already, a very long time will elapse before the election We cannot but think, therefore, that the meeting is premature. Rangiora Election.—Mr. Travers, who presents himself as a candidate for the district of Kaiapoi in the General Assembly, met the electors in the scheol-room,Rangior.i, on Tuesday last. He detailed his political views, which appeared to be favourably received by those present. A resolution, to the effect that Mr. Travers was a fit and proper person to represent the Kaiapoi district in the General Assembly, was proposed by Mr. Pearce, and passed unanimously. Mr. Buss was the chairman. About fifty electors were in the room. The River Selwyn.—Mr. Bean, the driver of the conveyance between Leeston and Christchurch, informs us that on Monday and Tuesday last, the Selwyn was so high and so rough, in consequence of the rain, that it was impossible to ford it, and he was compelled on each day to return with his passengers to Leeston. Yesterday he was enabled to cross ; the river though still rough, having gone down a little. A loaded bul-lock-dray got fixed in the mid-stream, notwithstanding Mr. Bean's efforts to assist the driver. The former sent to his assistance, and the dray was, we believe, conveyed across. Electoral.—Mr. Joseph Beswick met the electors at Woodend last evening, at the school-house. Mr. Booth having been moved to the chair, briefly introduced Mr. Beswick, who addressed the meeting at considerable length, and his views were received with approbation. After answering several questions put to him, the following resolution was proposed by Mr. Norton and seconded by Mr. Turner :—" That this meeting considers Mr. Beswick a fit and proper person to represent them.in the General Assembly." On the resolution being put, every hand in the room was held up in ita favour, and the chairman declared the meeting unanimous. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
