THE SEAT FOR KAIAPOI.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE LYTTELTOH TIMES. Sir, —Referring to Mr. Travers's speed here on Monday, the 12th, I notice in youi contemporary, the Press, of yesterday, thai Mr. Travers said lie had come forward at the invitation of some of the residents of the town, who thought he had a fair chance oi success. This is the very first intimation I have had—and I am an old resident and elector— of any one having requested Mr. Travers te stand for the Kaiapoi district in the General Assembly, though on inquiry 1 learn that one elector is a supporter of. Mr. Travers. All I can say is, that I should be extremely sorry for any one to snppose that one elector is the exponent of public opinion for this district. Irrespective of Mr. Travers's antecedents, as an elector, I think it would be highly unwise, and very undesirable, that Mr. Travers should represent this di trict in the General Assembly, mare particularly with his views about altering the land regulations. Such alterations I believe would be uttetly ruinous to the credit of the province ; they would be ruinous to the small landowners and labourers, and as far as I can ascertain and learn from them, they have the good sense to see it in this light. i.Quo word more; I do hope my brother electors will see that Mr. Travers would never come forward for this district, except for his own interests, for he has not a shilling of interest in it, and though in his address to the electors, he brought in Mr. Wilkin's name (our late member), I feel quite sure that Mr. Wilkin would never give him his support. Permit me to add that I have never had oue word with either candidate about this electiou. Yours &c., ONE OF MB. WILKIN'S COMMITTEE. Kaiapoi, Feb. 14.1866.
