Melbourne.—-The Australasian,oi December Ist states :— Our ever-fluctuating tariff of Customs duties has undergone several changes during the last two days. The s ale of units of entrj promulgated on the 17th inst., after having been modified by a proclamation which appeared on the 20th, has been altogether replaced by a new scale, which was proclaimed on Tuesday. The most remarkable feature in th« new tarilf is its abandonment of the duties on soft goods, plate, jewelry, carriages, «c.~mfact, all the protective duties imposed bv j BiH > and subsequently enforced under the Units of Entry Act. And now, the object for which this obsolete act was disinterred ana revived having thus been surrendered, the question is being generally asked, for what purposes are charges on units of entry maintained at •" r it cannot be for the revenue which, as at

present fixed, they will produM, u it ii rery doubtful whether they will do more than pay the cost of their own collection; it cannot be for , tho party principle they were in the flnt place imposed to uphold, for that has now been conceded; and it certainly cannot bo for any beneficial influ•ftce which they exert upon the operations of trade. Another ehanf ein the tariff of an equally important character came into play yesterday, as aoonsequenee of the prorogation of Parliament. Tho reduction of tho duties on tea, sugar, opium, dried fruit and gold, introduced sererel months ago, on the basis of resolutions of the Legislative Assembly, terminated with the Parliamentary sossion, and these duties on Wodnesday returned to their old rate. In anticipation of those changes, all goods on which tho reduced duties were payable have been cleared out of bond, and two vessels from China arrived just in time to allow of thoir cargoes being entered while tho lower rates wore in torce. Their doing so saved the consignees a sum of about £0,000, which would havo been paid to tho revenue had tho vessels arrived a day or two later. The result, therefore, of all tho changes lately made is to bring the tariff precisely to the same state as beforo the commencement of last session, with tho exception of tho vexatious chargos upon units of entry.
