The duties of Mr. Sale at the West Coast are officially announced. He is to be SubTreasurer and Commissioner (whatever that is) of the Provincial Government at the Goldfield; and he is to be Warden of the field under the Goldfields Act. The second appointment is open to any sort of construction, and it may mean that he will be trusted with full discretionary powers. If so, we hope the Government will state the fact, and let the public know what instructions have been given. Mr. Sale's office of Provincial Treasurer is to be filled by Mr. Ross. A very good appointment. Mr. Boss resigns, of course, his seat in the Council. Wherefore Mr. Ollivier, it is said, will be the Government candidate for Speaker; and Mr. E. C. J. Stevens and Mr. F. E. Stewart, it is also said, oppose one another for the Eakaia vacancy.
