An Eight Mil* Range with a Low Trajectory.—According to the public papers the Ames American rifled cannon has a range of seven miles and a quarter. Captain Norton writes :—" I hare a secret of throwing my patented * shell of the future' from a distance of eight miles out at sea so as to set flre to everything combustible on the shore. This can be kept a profound secret, *ot to be put in practice till a war breaks out. Whenever Government chooses to purchase it I expect will pay me twenty thousand pounds for it, not a maravedi less."
