IN THE KIVEB. Maid of tho Mill, ketch, Hobbs, loading with wool, for Lyttelton. Beswick and Birch, agents. M. Poucel, chief engineer of the Mseris steamer, belonging to the Messageries Imperiales, informs the Semaphore, of Marseilles, that a singular incident occurred during her voyage from Alexandria. When entering the Straits of Messina, on the evening of the 12th October, a strong shock was felt by all on board, and a most unusual agitation was noticed in the water, near the screw. The engines having been stopped, and a boat lowered, it was found that a whale had got entangled with the screw, which had inflicted a deep and mortal wound just behind the head. With some difficulty the dead monster was extricated and hoisted on deck, when it was found to measure 21 ft. 4 in. in length, with a maximum girth of 13 ft. 9 in. The Basque Pbospectob, of Dunedin, arrived in the morning, from Valparaiso, bringing an addition of 340 tons to the local stock of Chilian flour. The Prospector, on being purchased by Captain Duncan, sailed from this port for Valparaiso on the 2nd of November last, and made an unusually speedy passage across the South Pacific, arriving at her destination on the 30th of the same month. Having loaded a full cargo of flour, she sailed again on the 11th December, and hashada return passage protracted by light and baffling winds. We learn from Captain Duncan, of the barque Prospector, an attempt has been made to establish a line or steam communication between Liverpool and Valparaiso. Previous to the Prospector's visit to Valparaiso, two steamers had arrived, one making the passage in thirty-six days, and the other in thirty-five days, both having called at Madeira, Cape Verot, and Monte Video, proceedmg thence through Magellan Straits. Previous to the Prospector's departnre from Valparaiso, news had been received of the burning of a Spanish frigate at the Chincha Islands, said to be accidentally, though there were suspicions that it was an act of retaliation on the part of the Peruvians. Active war operations between Spain and Peru seem to be becoming daily more certain.—Otago Daily Times, Feb. 15.
