THE PRICE OF MEAT.

I TO THK EDITOR OF THE LTTXELTON TIMES. I • Sik, —Can you inform your renders how it is that [she price of butchers' meat is as high as ever, although the price of stock has greatly fallen ? I Im told that the butchers are now buying fat sheep it 4d per lb, and yet they continue to charge their EBftomers 9d and lOd. jf According to English, and even Colonial experience, they could Tery weLtaffonitQ-xatall their meat it 6d or 7d per lb, and I hope that even "the"patient Canterbury public will not be satisfied until this is lose. P, : • Yours, &c., ;V PATERFAMILIAS. f . I TELEGRAPH POLES. I: TO THE EDITOR OF THK LYTTELTON TIMEB. I Sm, —On travelling through the Cheviot Hills run, jjm few days ago, I was much surprised to see birch Saplings being carted for telegraph poles, which cerffainly cannot be expected to last more than three lyears. And again, the line selected by the engineer [through this district will always be difficult to supply with fresh poles. Some few months ago the editor N»f the Xehon Examiner-pointed, out to the engineer ia very much better route by way of Hastie's, HuruEui, and on by a dray road to the mouth of the river where this line would cross the river Waiau, near the ferry. About six miles from this point, an unlimited supply of suitable timber for poles, from Crown lands, could be obtained. Two shorter lines from the Waiau Ferry could be found, if approved of by the engineer, and striking the coast at the Kaikora peninsula. In. a very few years telegraph stations will be required at Hastie's »nd at the ferry, Waiau river. Yours, &c., Amuri, Jan. 20. AMURI.
