Sydney, 15th January. The rates of discount have been raised by the banks to eight per cent, for three months' bills; nine per cent, for four months; and ten per cent, for overdrafts. There is a good demand for three-bushel bags, which have been placed to-day at from 17s. 9d. to 18s. Gunny bags have beeen sold at Bs. 6d. The cargo of sugars, ex Humboldt, from Bourbon, was disposed of to-day by auction, at the following prices:—Dark brown counters, £33; good light do., £37 15s; inferior crystals, £39 per ton. 16th January. The Legislative Assembly have agreed to the imposition of a duty of £2 per ton on rice. The debate on the question lasted a whole week. Mr. Nathan, the well-known composer, was yesterday run over by a truck on the tramway, and killed. Arrived: Mary Scott, from London; Beautiful Star, from Otago; Lady Emma, from Hobart Town; James Patterson, Rockhampton; Kembla, from coast. 18th January. Mr. Charles Kean has been suddenly taken dangerously ill. In consequence of the new duty, rice is very firm, and holders refuse to sell except at an advance on previous rates. It is not considered likely that any extra duty on tobacco will be proposed. 19th January. Mr. Charles Kean is recovering, byt he will not be able to leave for Melbourne to-morrow as he had intended. There is not much doing in sugar; the supply is well maintained, and there is no disposition evinced to speculate. The Assembly are still discussing the tariff. A duty of 3d per lb. on hops and 6d per bushel on malt has been agreed to. . The proposed increase in the duty on tobacco has been abandoned, and that on cigars has been fixed at 5s per lb. The House is now engaged in discussing the proposed duty on boots and shoes. The weather to-day has been very squally. 20th January. Taxes of £10 on four-wheeled carriages, £5 on two-wheeled carriages, Is 6d per cubic foot ou furniture and musical inslruments, and 3d per lb. on coffee, were last evening agreed to in the Legislative Assembly. , The House are to-night engaged in discussing the proposed duty on boots and shoes. This is violently opposed by the Opposition, who appear to be gaiuing strength. Arrived : Marion, Susannah Booth, from New Zealand; Ocean Empress, from Liverpool, with emigrants; La Reine, from Bourbon.
