THE CATHEDRAL COMMISSION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE LYTTKLTOX TIMES. Sir, —Your correspondent of Saturday last is t'u>taken in supposing that the cathedral "is to be l'"' l ' of wood. The walls and tower arc to bo of stone; the internal structureof the nave, the piers, trit'orium. and clerestory, are indeed to be of wood, according to Mr. Scott's designs. A proposal, however, to build the piers of stone, together with some information as to the facilities of obtaining stone. ha? been forwarded to Sir. Scott for his consideration Were this alteration made, it would however neeessitate a complete change of the internal structure, much of the expense already incurred would K' thrown away. " ' Being aware of the anxiety uf the public tj> obtain information on the subject of the catliedr.il. I may say that the commission was much di>- , appointed at receiving no letter from Mr. Scott by the last mail, but the following extract of a letter received by the Bishop from his commissary, the Rev. T. Stevens, of Bradtield, Berks, leads tlu-ni te / expect that they will receive answers to their com- I munications by the next opportunitv. •• I Iwve been at Spring Gardens once or twice discussing matters about, the cathedral with Mr. Scott. You lß>;ir from his office direct in answer to all vour letters, I will only say that we heartilv bid s l )ec " u ' your good great work." Pending the arrival of these letters, and the appointment of a resident architect, 1 am not aware that the commission can, with safety or discretion, take any step beyond what they have already taken, namely, to advertise for tenders for the tun "- 1 required in the construction of the nave. I am, Sir, yours faithfully, HENRY JACOBS, Hon. Sec. to the Cathedral Commission. Christchurch, July 7th, 1863.
