PUBLIC MEETING AT TIMARU.
A public meeting was held on Thursday evening, the 18th instant, to consider the best way of celebrating the public holiday proclaimed by the Government in honor of the marriage of the Prince of Wales. Mr. Woolcombe, R.M., being called to the chair, explained the reason for his convening the meeting, and read a letter received from the Government, granting £50 towards the public amusements, and suggested that the amount should be further augmented by subscriptions. It was resolved that the life-boat should be drawn round the town in procession, and afterwards launched and christened " Alexandra," in honor of the Princess of Wales. That the children of the town should have an entertainment. That fireworks should be obtained from Dunedin. That hack races and rural sports should be organized; and that the festivities should wind up with a subscription dinner and a ball. The sum of ten guineas was subscribed in the room, and further subscriptions were to be obtained to supplement the Government grant of £50. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
