CANTERBURY RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.

LYTTELTON. On Saturday last, the members of No. 3 Company assembled at the Government Range, Polhill's Bay, for the purpose of firing for the company's silver champion cup with £5 added, and three additional money prizes for the next best shots. Eleven o'clock was the time officially announced for commencing the proceedings of the day, but it was almost twelve before the order was given to "load." In the original programme, it was intended only to have two additional money prizes; but the Volunteers on the ground decided to subscribe for a sum of money for the fourth best shot. The day, was all that a marksman could desire, scarcely a breath of wind to disturb the bullet in its flight; the atmosphere was cool, but clear; and the ground in capital order. On this occasion, the new Government regulations were closely adhered to with respect to the mode of firing, the size of the target, and the system of counting one for each hit. The following is a tabulated statement of the respective scores-.— •0.T03S io 05 00t»000050i(Mr-(0 1(5 oas <WSiH<NIH<N<N<N<N<N<NIH,H H rH -2 *34 H^^HWWCONWNHOH 3 a :::::::::::::: §<noho<NO«oooooooo 50 ooohooohhishhoo g .3 rHO<NiHOOO<NOOOOOO . p 5 hohnohhoooooom W NHCIHOrIOHrtHHOOO dT o .2 Ed :::::::::::::: Ph "K n P< f-S OCSiO 01i0<NC5iHl>i0O<N®O .So OpH r-H r-H r-H tH £ - w oj f+tc ® .13 I|W _ nhhonhhwohwooo g jS HOO»O<nohimohooo .2 sioosiosif h homhoo W (§ OOOSOHHHONHOOO rtOSIHHHHHHOOOOO 05 PH •h © O rH H ri HHHHri HH H . co ©" ."§ >0 "5 rH CO rp 'O 10 10 CO >0 rjl rH ,_2 I w i . «£ § go g 42<N<NOO<N'H<N<N r H<NrH'H<NO h K •9<NNOOI-!<NCO<N I -lOO<NIHO #+- NNOHNHHO««HHHN ». It will be seen from the above that Captain Murray Aynsley proved himself the best shot on the occasion, and will hold the cup for twelve months, as champion of the Lyttelton Volunteers, 1863.. Singular to say, Messrs. Willcox, Tombs, and Patten each made 29 points, and they had to fire off for places and prizes. The result was as follows:—Private Willcox, £10; Private Tombs, £5; and Private Patten, the sweepstakes.
