GENTLEMEN, —Having been offered and having accepted the office of Provincial Solicitor, the law compels me to resign my seat in the Provincial Council, but it nevertheless permits me to offer myself for re-election I have therefore again the honor of presenting myself as a candidate for your support. I trust you will forgive the shortcomings of which I am fully conscious, and will permit me to renew a union which I venture to hope may be firm and lasting. FELLOW SETTLERS, —A vacancy having occurred by the resignation of your representative in the Provincial Council, Mr. R. H. Rhodes, I now beg to offer myself as a candidate for that office. If I have the honor of being returned by you I shall dilligently watch over your interests in the Council; but, in order that as your representative I may be enabled effectually to advance those interests, it is important that I should reccive full statistical information relative to the different districts, and especially that bearing upon the subjects of education and roads, which are sure to occupy much of the attention of the Council during its next session, and in which I conceive you are most deeply interested. WHEREAS it has this day been proved to the satisfaction of us, the undersigned, two of her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, acting in and for the. Colony of New Zealand, and sitting at the Resident Magistrate's Court, at Lyttelton, in the said Colony, that one JOHN MAHONEY, has become an habitual drunkard, and is injuring his health and wasting his substance by excessive drinking. We hereby, under the provisions of the thirty-third clause of the Public House Ordinance, 1862, give notice, that we prohibit all persons from supplying the said JOHN MAHONEY with any spirituous or fermented liquor whatever during the SPACE OF TWO YEARS from the date hereof. And we also give notice, that any person who shall knowingly supply or cause to be supplied to the said JOHN MAHONEY any spirituous or fermented liquor whatever during the SPACE OF TWO YEARS from the date hereof, is liable to a penalty of (£2O) TWENTY POUNDS STERLING, or to be imprisoned (with or without hard labour) for the term of three calendar months. Given under our hands at Lyttelton, this Fourteenth Day of April, 1863. Description of the Above-Named: — JOHN MAHONEY, last of Lyttelton, labourer, is about 44 years of age; 5 feet 4 inches high; has deep set gray eyes; hair and whiskers partly gray; his nose, which has been broken, is inclined to the right; has a large forehead, with several scars upon it; and a dimpled chin; is a native of Ireland, and has been 15 years in this settlement.
