PUBLIC NOTICE. CONVEYANCE OF MAILS. TENDERS will be received at the Post-office, Lyttelton, until noon on Monday, the 18th day of May, 1863, for the CONVEYANCE of the undermentioned MAILS from the Ist day July, 1863, to the 30th day of June, 1864:— LYTTELTON AND CHRISTCHURCH MATT. For the conveyance of mails between Lyttelton and Christchurch twice a day; receiving and delivering mails at the Post-offices in the Heathcote Valley and Ferry road. The mails to start from Lyttelton every day (excepting Sunday) at 8.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.ni; the mails to leave Christchurch at the same hours. The mails not to be longer than two hours on the journey between the two towns. The newspapers by the English mails being of considerable bulk, must as heretofore be conveyed by way of Sumner; but the contractors must undertake to deliver them at the Post-office Christchurch within three hours and a-half from the time of the receipt of them from the Postmaster at Lyttelton. Lockers must be provided in the mail carts performing this service, and the mails kept locked up while on the road. The contractors to undertake to convey mails arriving at Lyttelton by the royal mail steamers at any hour between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., Sundays included; the contractors to have horses in readiness to go at any hour of the night, one pound being paid for the journey when not coming within the contract hours. CHRISTCHURCH AND KAIAPOI MAIL. For the conveyance of a daily mail between Christchurch and Kaiapoi (Sundays excepted). Mails to leave Christchurch and Kaiapoi respectively at 11.30 a.m.; mails to arrive in Christchurch at 1.25 p.m., so that the mails can be forwarded to Lyttelton the same day. KAIAPOI AND RANGIORA. For the conveyance of mails three times a week between Kaiapoi and Rangiora. The mails to leave Rangiora on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so as to reach Kaiapoi in time to be forwarded with the mails for Christchurch, returning from Kaiapoi on the afternoons of the same days, after the arrival there of the mails from Christchurch. Contractors are also invited to send in tenders for the performance of this service daily. RANGIORA AND OXFORD. For the conveyance of mails once a week between Rangiora and Oxford. The mails to leave Rangiora at 10 a.m. every Friday, and to arrive at Oxford not later than 4 p.m.; starting from Oxford at 10 a.m. every Saturday with the return mail to Rangiora, arriving there not later than 4 p.m. KAIAPOI AND THE KOWAI. For the conveyance of mails three times a week between Kaiapoi and the Post-office, Kowai, calling at the Post-offices, Woodend and Saltwater Creek. Mails to leave Kaiapoi on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 9 a.m., returning to Kaiapoi the same day. RANGIORA AND OXFORD. For the conveyance of mails once a week between Rangiora and Oxford. The mails to leave Rangiora at 10 a.m. every Friday, and to arrive in Rangiora by 4 p.m. every Saturday. KAIAPOI AND THE RIVER HURUNUI AND HIGHFIELD. For the conveyance of a weekly mail to the Hurunui, going on alternate trips as far as Highfield. Contractors for this service are also requested to send in tenders for a weekly mail from Kaiapoi to" Hawkswood, as it is probable that the Government will determine to forward a weekly mail to that place. CHRISTCHURCH, TIMARU, MACKENZIE PLAINS, AND THE RIVER WAITANGI. For the conveyance of mails twice a week between Christchurch and Timaru, extending the service weekly, to meet the Otago contractor at the river Waitangi. Also, for a fortnightly mail between Timaru and the Mackenzie Plains. Except owing to unavoidable accident, the mail not to be longer than two days in summer and three days in winter on the road to Timaru, and not to be longer than three days from Timaru to the River Waitangi and back to Timaru. The contractor to remain four hours at Timaru and a similar time at Waitangi. LYTTELTON, AKAROA, AND PIGEON BAY MAILS. For the conveyance of mails twice a week between Lyttelton and Akaroa. The mails to start from Lyttelton every Wednesday and Saturday, so as to reach Pigeon Bay not later than 1 p.m., and return from Pigeon Bay to Lyttelton on the same day, after having remained there at least one hour. OKAIN'S BAY AND PIGEON BAY. For the conveyance of a weekly mail between Pigeon Bay and Okain's Bay. The contractor to start from Okain's Bay so as to arrive at Pigeon Bay at 1 p.m.; to remain there at least one hour, and to return to Okain's Bay the same day with the mail from Lyttelton. LYTTELTON AND PORT LEVY MATT,, For the conveyance of a weekly mail between Lyttelton and Port Levy. Mails to leave Lyttelton at 11 a.m. on Saturdays; return mails to be delivered at Lyttelton at 11 a.m, on Mondays. CHRISTCHURCH AND SNOWDON, VIA RACE COURSE HILL. For the conveyance of a fortnightly mail between Christchurch and Snowdon, via Race-course Hill, (This line of postal communication will only be established on the condition of one-half of the expense being defrayed by the settlers benefitted by the service.) OKAIN'S BAY TO LITTLE AKALOA BAY. For the conveyance of a mail weekly from Okain's Bay to Little Akaloa Bay. GENERAL CONDITIONS. Tenders for each servicc must state the names of proposed sureties.' Contractors to be bound to keep mails dry and if carried on horseback, to take every means to prevent the chafing of the contents of mail hags while travelling. Contractors will not be allowed to take up at any place within one mile of a Post-office, any letters or newspapers; but letters and newspapers may be carried by the contractors between places along the road which are more than a mile distant from the Post-office. Such letters to have the proper amount of postage in stamps affixed to them, which stamps the contractor is bound to destroy. Contractors must undertake to receive and deliver letter bags at such houses or places along the road is may be desired by the Postmaster. j Contractors will be bound to proceed with mails without any undue delay or stoppage on the road i ifter the hour of departing from the Post-office < Mail cart drivers and letter carriers to be subject ;o instant dismissal if found drunk while on duty. The Postmaster to have the option at any time of lelaying the carrier for half-an-hour after the usual lour for the departure of the mail. Contractors will have to find sureties for the per'ormance of their respective contracts. 1
