RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, AKAROA.
[Before John Watson, R.M., and Robert Greaves, • ■ J.P., Esqrs.] \ Charlies Smith appeared bn the Sth'inst., to answer an information laid by William R. Potter, master of [the U;Si ship Illinois, of. New Bedford, accusing him bf a breach of the Bth clause of the Fotfeign Seamen's Deserters Act, in conniving at, and aiding and abetting in the desertion of Thomas Kelly, 4th officer-of the above ship, on the night of Sunday,.' the 6th inst., by taking him from on board the ship, together with his effects during the time he was in charge of, a watch. The accused pleaded guilty, and was lined in the full penalty. As there are sixteen ; deserters from the above ship now at large, the descriptions of whom are in the hands of the police, we think it as well to inform the public that Captain Potter's agent has been instructed to prosecute all parties who may have i been guilty of aiding and
abetting these'men'hitherto, arid all who shall retain them' in their service : hen cef < ward; -or who shall in" any 1 way render them assistance in'escaping' from a return to their duty ; and that the instructions hei hlas'received are to spare no pains and expense- in piishirig for a conviction wherever and whenever'the sariie may be practicable. : ■ 1
