THE CENSUS.

The returns of the Census of 1861 for the Province of Canterbury have now been perfected. They are comprised in eight tables lettered from A to 11. Tible A shews the population of sub-districts, classified with reference to age and sex. Table B gives i return of houses or buildings, and the social condition of the people. Table C states the rank, profession. or usual occupation. Table D, the place of birth. Table E, religious denomination. Table F, education. Table G, cultivation and crops. Table 11. live stock.

We uive below a very brief abstract of these returns for the present, intending to present them in a more complete form when opportunity offers. population, classified with reference to Age and g ex _Of males, there were 8939, Under six years of 1923; six and under sixteen, 1668; sixteen and under twenty-one, 652 ; twenty-one and under forty 3629; forty and under fifty-five, 879; fiftyfive and under sixty-five, 138; sixty-five and upwards, 50.—0f females, there were 7101. Under six years of age, 1893 ; six and under sixteen, 1471; sixteen and under twenty-one, 615 ; twenty-one and under forty, 2404; forty and under fifty-five, 603; fifty-five and under sixty-five, 93; sixty-five and upwards, 22. Of these, twenty-four males and twenty-two females were half-castes.

Houses or Buildings, and Social .Condition of the People.—Of houses or buildings'there were 3237 ; of which 2257 were constructed of wood, 47 of stone or brick, 56 of raupo, and 577 of other materials. 1095 contained one or two rooms each, 482 three rooms, 508 four rooms, 226 five rooms, 926 six rooms or upwards. Of the dwellers therein, 2760 males and 2785 females were married; 6047 males and 4174 females were unmarried; seven males and three females were deaf and dumb; and two males and one female were blind.

Place of Birth. —Of the whole population of the Province 4822 males, 3680 females, were born in England; 578 males, 476 females, in Ireland; 802 males, 566 females, in Scotland; 53 males, 33 females, in Wales; 2073 males, 1982 females, in New Zealand.; 159 males, 149 females, in Australian colonies ; 139 males, 79 females, in other British dominions ; 43 males, 10 females, in the United States; 71 males, 26 females, in France; 82 males, 40 females, in Germany; 70 males, 13 females, in other Foreign States; and 47 males and 47 females, at sea. Religious Denomination.—Church of England, 6026 males, 4712 females; Church of Scotland, 192 males, 143 females; Roman Catholic Church, 499 males, 390 females ; Free Church of Scotland, 113 males, 87 females; other Presbyterians, 823 males, 656 females; Wesleyan Methodists, 845 males, 771 females; Congregational Independents, 124 males, 95 females; Baptists, 116 males, 123 females; Primitive Methodists, 53males, 43 females; Lutherans, 31 males, 16 females; Hebrews, 21 males, 15 females; Society of Friends, 8 males, 1 female; other denominations, 88 males. 49 females. Education. —Of persons under sixteen years of age, 2020 males and 1942 females could not read, 486 males and 495 females could read only, 1085 males and 927 females could read and write; sixteen years of age and upwards, 209 males and 147 females could not read, 188 males and 285 females could read only, 4951 males and 3345 females could read and write ; of these, 62 were members of Universities. There were being educated, at day schools supported by Government aid, 525 males and 339 females ; at day schools not receiving Government aid, 356 males and 369 females; at Sunday schools, 271 males and 264 females; at both day and Sunday schools, 499 males and 462 females. Cultivation and Crops.—There were 72,939$ acres of land fenced in, of Which acres were under crop, 12,785£ acres being in wheat, 1489£ in barley, 4535* in oats, 7f in maize, 1088$ in potatoes, 10,310| in sown grass, 1240£ in garden or orchard, and 1349 i in other crops.

Live Stock.' —Of horses, there were 6049; asses and mules, 29; horned cattle, 33,576; sheep, 877,369; goats, 625 ; pigs, 9586 ; poultry, 41,729.
