Bowen on and after this clay —A notice is contained that Mr. James Wylde has resigned his seat in the Provincial Council for the Ivaiapoi district.—Messrs. Ward and Eeeves are appointed official printers for the Provincial Government of Canterbury, within the meaning of the 7th clause of the " Official Documents Act, 1860."—By the list of arrivals and departures in the port of Lyttelton, from Ist to 31st January, 1862, published for the first time in the Gazette, in accordance with the resolution of the Provincial Council during the J late session, we find that 307 males, 43 females, and 28 children arrived from, and 99 males, 18 females, and 8 children left for, ports within the colony. 34 males, 15 females, and 9 children arrived from, and 5 males, 5 females, and 3 children left for ports without the colony. The above returns show an apparent balance of immigration over, emigration to the extent of 388 souls. As the returns are taken from the entries reported at the Customs, and it is not compulsory for steamers to make a declaration of the exact number of passengers taken away by them, while all the incomers are sure to be reported, these returns cannot be relied upon for the purpose of calculating the increase or decrease of population.
