TOWN AND COUNTRY NEWS.
Mr. Back has been appointed to the office of Provincial Treasurer vacant by the resignation of Mr. Harman. The cause of Mr. Harman's resignation appears to be his refusal to sign a cheque for a warrant issued by the Superintendent under the advice of his Executive and passed in due form by the Auditor. As this refusal brought on a dead lock, no alternative remained but the resignation of Mr. Harman, which was accepted. It is probable that the late Provincial Treasurer will take an early opportunity of explaining his reasons for so weighty a step.
Two reserves have been made in the Malvern district, one of 1920 acres, and one of 312 for coal field purposes. A reserve of 2560 acres has also been made in tfie same district for a township. All these reserves have reference to the late discoveries of coal made by Mr. Haast. The quantity of land sold in the different districts, for the month ending; July 31 1861, is as follows :— ' DISTEICT. A. E. P. DISTEICT.
