Mr. Charles Hunter Brown was proposed by Mr. Oilivier, seconded by Mr. Thomson, and there being no other candidate, was declared duly elected. As on the last similar occasion the attendance was very small. '

CHRISTCHURCH MECHANICS' INSTITUTE

In connection with the above society, Mr. J. Cracroft Wilson resumed his narrative of the Rebellion of India, on Tuesday evening last, in the Town Hall, Christchurch. Without- following the narrator word by word through the whole of his very interesting discourse, it would be impossible for us to give more than a very meagre summary of it. Suffice it to say that throughout the whole length of the narrative, both on this and tho preceding" occasion, the lecturer was heard with intense interest by a very unusually large audience, the body, gallery, and platform of the spacious Town Hall being crowded to excess, by eager listeners of both sexes and all ages. The interest of the discourse was enhanced by the exhibition of several articles -connected in various ways with the subject; among which we may notice a small, but very beautiful chair, formerly belonging to the ex-King of Delhi, and a dog, late the property of one of the massacred officers of the 32nd regiment. The discourse of Tuesday evening turned chiefly on the perilous but successful expedition of the lecturer himself, and a few faithful followers, for the purpose of rescuing Captain Go wan and his companions from the midst of a rebel district, where they were concealed under the protection of some of the friendly native landholders, in the district of Rohilcund.

Mr. Wilson announced his intention of resuming the subject on Tuesday evening next, May 1, at the same place and hour.
