To tlte Editor of. the ~byttelton Times. Sib,—l should have left Mr. Stoddart in the enjoyment .of his last shot, but. for the attempt he makes to impute motives to me, wtiich happily those who have known me will not concur in. Mr. Stoddart, says, infact, that because hejs a. freeholder he is entitled to do what he likes with 1 hig own, and leave everyone else to lookout for themselves, —that every one must respect hisrights, and obtain theirs as they can. Had Mr. Stoddart fenced his land}as he ought to have done, befor'^ he laid the" tempting bait of cultivation in a district open to be besieged by wild cattle (as he states), there would have been nogroundrfor complaint-or cavilling. But the working men in his locality will tell you that they havebeenthe sufferers by: the adoption of; the opposite course, arid' the pound fees they -Have had to pay-will perhaps attest, this. It is hot my case but theirs I contend for. I can endjure annoyance or not-^withme;it is payment or removal; with them it is heavy loss. , ■'•••., Mr. Stoddart, when; he recommended to me the study of Scripture, might have more profitably applied the maxim, that " charity coyereth -a multitude of sins;" and had he shown a: little more of this virtue and a little, less acrimony arid perhaps selfishness, he would have been entitled to mor.e: regard when he comes forward so chivalrously as the advocate of public principle. ' ' , „ Yours, &e.y R. H. RHODES.
