! The Prince Alfred arrived in port oh Wednesday morning, but without the English mail. She left,

! Sydney on the evening of the 10th inst., at which time the telegraph had not announced the arrival of the "P. and 0. steamer (the Malta) at Kangaroo Island, then 8 days overdue. It is to be feared, as the Malta was.the fastest boat of the line, that she {has not merely .made, a slow passage, b\it has been ■detained „by some unfortunate accident. On her ;last voyage up/to Suez she broke one of her air. pumps, but this had been repaired. It is also known ithat she lias'not had her hull overhauled for some ; months', and must therefore.be very foul. The Airedale, having to. complete her. cabin fittings, would await the announcement of the mail till the 12th ; if it was ..the'n known to be on the coast, she would await its arrival in Sydney and take it all to Auckland, whence we should receive our portion by the Lord Ashley,,on her next inteivprovincial route, probably, a few days after contract ,tjme. "We have some hopes of receiving the news-^-if not the letters— earlier, by way. of Otago, as the Queen or Pirate might remain in., Melbourne till the 17th or 18th, and still reach Dunedih in time to catch the Prince :Alfred; The Queen was ready to: leave Melbourne jon the Bth November;1 the Pirate would probably be longer for repairs. : , :

i,,Tbe'Prince Alfred left Sydney on the evening of :the loth, on which day the Lord Worsley' arrived from in ample time for the homeward mail. The Prince Alfred reached Nelson at noon, on the

16th, left the following day. for Wellington, and made the passage from port to port in 14J hours. She remained in Wellington till Monday, the 21st, and sailed again for this port at 6 p.m. on that day, with a fair wind. At 9 p.m. a.squall from SE. (which passed over Lyttelton about 5 the same evening) struck her and split fore-sail, and fore •square-sail, and mizen. In the gale which followed,1 the steamer made but little way, and it was not 'till noon on Tuesday that "the weather moderated. She :brought several passengers and a fair share of cargo. The inner moorings at Timaru, which foundered last, year ,in ..consequence of the, breaking of a shackle when the-Spray-was riding, by them, have just been.laid down in a proper and perfect manner by Mr. Eirnsiey, master of the Wellington, who deserves great:credit: for the .manner in which hehas managed the job. The Wellington returned to port yesterday morning.

The Louis and Miriam from this .port/ reached Sydney on the Bth November. She was to sail again without delay. , ;-

The brig Maria, Anderson,, was laid on from Sydney to this port, to sail shortly after the departure of the steamer. . '" , '.
