LINES

SUGGESTED BY THE RECENT LOSS OF A MUCH VALUED FRIEND. Ami can it be that truth and modest worth, And depth of kindly feeling,—all should fade, And pass away, witli thee, blest shade, from earth, Ere Nature's mortal course was duly made; No more to lend their fascinating power To give attraction to the social hour? Mysterious Providence! we still must bend With resignation to thy iix'd decree, Nor dare to question that which Heav'n ordains to be. Yet oft, again, in memory's pleasing dream, Thy pure and gentle spirit still shall seem To linger in the paths of friendship and esteem, And spread the charm thou could'st so well impart, Of polished manners and a feeling heart. . Nov. 15,1859. H. W. B.
