Full returns of all statistics connected with the customs department of the colony of New Zealand, for the quarter ended 31st March List, aie published as usual in the general Government' Gazette.' By the last mail we received a copy of the ' Gazette' containing the returns in question, and we now proceed to place an outline of them before .our readers. The first return is that of the Customs Kevenue for the quarter, at each port of New Zealand, distinguishing the heads of receipt, and comparing the total for each port with that of the corresponding quarter of 1858. The grand total for the colony was £41,884 3s. Bd., against £31,126 10s. 9d., for the same quarter of 1858; a very respectable increase. Of this total, spirits contribute £13,290 Is.; measurement goods at 3s. £3,943 25.; tobacco, £3,406 125.; measurement goods at Is. £2,345 16s. lid.; Sugar, £1,947 Os. lid.; wine. £1,477 16s. Id.; the class of goods charged by weight £1.151 Bs. 4d.. other articles less than £1000 each. Comparing the provinces with one another, we find the duties leceived for the quarter of each year, in all the ports of—

It will be see'i. that Auckland still remains the ' first province, though boing gradually iieared'by \V cllington ; Canterbury is still (fcfapidlyuclvaifoing, third; Otasyo has overtaken' Nelson and'left thelatter the fifth place; while Taranaki has succumbed to Hawkes Buy and dropped astern altogether. The return of the value of imports for the quarter shows an increase of more than' 50 per cent, for the whole colony. The provinces are credited as follows :—

I In this return the provinces stand,in the Bi™» order as ,„ the former, except that Auckland fc ; de K nul C ( from her leading position to make way ■tor Wpllmgton, and remains 'but a trifle ahead of Canterbury. Tamnaki has alno a-struggle to L! ■;her place as sixth, and'jiist succeeds. Wellington and Canterbury have advanced from last year in a most alike proportion (about 90 per cent): Jlawke, ; The next return in that of, the' exports for the ■SSI?* ?"a amOmitccl t0 again £92 168 (or-the corresponding quarter of 1858 a most.miraculous i,,crca,e, if there were not a suffi- ; cient ..xplanut.on to be found in the increased ex- ; port from Wellmgton and Canterbury arising from :a large proportion of the wool going away just it ;this time. The provincial returns are:—.

In this return Canterbury, owing to her early wool export, stands facile jprinc&ps. It should not be forgotten, however, that the exports of this province for the second Quarter have been by no means inconsideiable. . Wellington is second, Nelson third, Auckland only fourth, Otago fifth, and Taranaki sixth. The youngest province does not yet show its strength in this respect. Taking all these return's.together and recollecting the comparative population in each province, we submit that Canterbury'is amply justifying the faith which, those wiio' know' the country have alwaj's placed in its resources. •
