TVTOTICE is hereby given, that the First -*-* Election of Scholars on the Somes Foundation in Christ's College, will take place on SATURDAY, the 25th op SEPTEMBER, in the present year. Two scholarships will be offered for competition, one of the annual value of 448, tenable for three years and a-half; the other of the annual value of £32. tenable for two years and a-haif; the former amount to be raised to £60, the latter to £40, annually, provided the scholar shall pass a satisfactory annual examination in the studies of the preceding year. All members of the United Church of England and Ireland, or of any branch of the said Church, or of any Church in communion therewith, wheresoever born or resident, who shall have attained on the day of election the full age of fifteen, and shall not have exceeded the age of nineteen years, are admissible as candi- j dates. Preference will be given, cceteris parib as, ] to the kindred of Maria Somes, the foundress, or of her late husband, Joseph. Somes, deceased. Candidates must bring or send their applicaI tions in writing to the Sub-Warden of Christ's College, at any time not later than the 20th of September, every such application to bo accompanied by satisfactory certificates of age and of good moral character. Any candidate claiming the privilege of founder's kin will also be required to furnish satisfactory proof in writing of Ms consanguinity. . Candidates must attend in'person at the College, on Wednesday, the 22nd of September, at 10 a.m., to be examined on that and the following days. They will first be examined viva voce in the Church Catechism, Scripture History, -History of England, Grammar, Geography, and Arithmetic; and such as exhibit a satisfactory knowledge of those subjects will be farther examined; Firstly, in Latin and Greek Grammar, and in two or more of the Lfftin and Greek Authors most commonly read in schools. Secondly, in Algebra as far as Quadratic Equations, The i First Four Books of Euclid, The Elements of I Plane Trigonometry, especially in its application to Navigation and Land Surveying, and the Elements of- Physical" Science. And, Thirdly, in History, Ancient and Modern, The History of the Church, Physical Geography, and one or more Modern Languages. In estimating the comparative merits of the candidates, marked proficiency in any one of the three branches, even if there should be great deficiency in one or both of the remainder, will be rated higher than a superficial knowledge of a greater number of subjects. The successful candidates will be required to reside within the precincts of the College during the College terms (except where special exemption from residence shall have been granted by the Governing Body of the College) and to observe all the regulations, aud the course of study, prescribed by the College.
