NEW PLYMOUTH.

Pkoposed Rifle Coups for New Plymouth. —On the loth instant a meeting took place ut Mr. Black's Room, Dr. Wilson in the chair^fo'r the purpose of forming a Rifle Corps for the protection of the Settlement, and resolutions were passed appointing a committee to wait oh the Superintendent for his approval, and to ascertain whether he could hold out any hopes of assistance from the Provincial Government; and further, that his Honor would authorise-fl^i; training to arms. Another committee was "also appointed to draw up. temporary regulations. Application having been made to his Honor by the Committee, it was found that he did not consider he had power to authorise the training to arms. His Honor, however, promised to endeavour to obtain the sanction of His Excellency, and to obtain his approval of a grant of money in aid. On the 22nd instant a second meeting was held to receive the report of the committee, when it was resolved that until the receipt of His Honor's reply, it would =uot be proper to draw up any laws, or take any further steps beyond enrolling the names of those who were willing to become members of the Corps. A large number of names were given in the room, and we learn the lists have since received large additions. We had intended to have dealt more at large upon the propriety of the establishment of a force of this kind in the Province, but the business of the Council runs this week to so great length, that we are,, for the present, prevented from doing so. However, our position as regards our native neighhours, and the danger we share in common with the other dependencies of the Crown from the common enemy, have already pressed themselves on public attention, and to a certain extent forestalled observation. We shall at an early date return to the subject, and, meanwhile, recommend that the time that will elapse between, the present and the arrival of the steamer should be turned^ to the best advantage in seconding His . Honor's application to Head Quarters.—Tarawa** Herald. Dec. 4.
