OFFIGfAL -NOTIFICATION. HIS Excellency the Governor-in-Chief has been pleased to appoint LieutenantColonel James Campbell to be a Commissioner under the Ordinance of the Legislative Council of New Zealand, entitled "-The New Zealand Company's Land Claimant's Ordinance," Session xi. No. 15, for the Middle District of the Middle Island : viz. that portion bounded by the Kaikora Range and the Snowy Ranges to the source of the Buller River, and by the latter River to its mouth, on the North ; and by the Waitaugi River to its source, and a line thence to Cascade Point on the South, including the District of Canterbury. His Excellency has also been pleased to appoint Lieutenant-Colonel James Campbell to be a Commissioner under the " Land Claims Ordinance, Session I. No. 2," for investigating and reporting upon claims to Land in the Middle District of the Middle Island, including the Canterbury District. His Excellency has been further pleased to appoint Lieutenant-Colonel J ames Campbell to be a Commissioner of Crown Lauds, under the " Crown Lands Ordinance, Session X. No. 1, and Crown Lands Amendment and Extension j Ordinance, Session XT. No. 10," for the Middle I District of the Middle Island, exclusive of the Canterbury District. His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief has { been pleased to appoint Charles Obin Torlesse, Esq. to be Surveyor of Crown Lands, and Clerk j to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, for the Middle District of the Middle Island. His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief directs j it to be notified that John Watson, Esq., Resi- j dent Magistrate, has been appointed to receive claims under the "New Zealand Company's Land Claimants' Ordinance," for the settlement of Akaroa, Banks's Peninsula, and the Canterbury District, and to refer the same to the Commissioner appointed under the said Ordinance. Lieutenant Colonel Campbell having arrived in the Middle District of the Middle Island, all communications intended for him, are to be addressed to him, on Her Majesty's Service, at ■; his office, Christchurch. It is requested, in order to obviate delays in the adjustment of Land Claims by tlie Commissioner, as well as in his attending to applications for Sheep and •Cattle Runs, or for Rural Lands, beyond the Canterbury block, that they should be transmitted through the proper channels; and, in every instance, strict attention must be paid to what is prescribed in the Ordinances ■of the Legislative Council of New Zealand, and those j applications which have already been made for Runs, and even advertised, and which are not in conformity to these Ordinances, should be re- i neweil, whilst Nos. 5 and 6 of the Rules and Regulations must be carefully'observed by applicants, particularly in stating the number of Sheep and Cattle they now possess and intend for their Runs, if granted, as also what they intend to place upon them within six months from the date of the applications. Auy Ordinance, as also printed forms of application for depasturing licenses can be had at Wellington and Auckland, and the former may be seen, and the latter got at the Commissioner's Office, where also other information may be obtained. When it can be done, the Maori names of objects, points, or rivers, &c, intended to define the boundaries of Runs applied for, are to be used in preference to any other designations, which too often lead to confusion and disputes among the applicants; and all persons are cautioned as to what they make themselves liable to, under the Ordinances, for trespasses upon the Waste Lands of the Crown. It is to-be observed that the tract of country bounded by a line drawn from the northernmost point of Half-moon Bay, about seven miles north of Kaikora Peninsula, back to the southernmost high peak of the Kaikora Range; thence by a line running at an average distance of Bight miles from the coast; thence striking the first river (about o miles south of Ainuri Bluff,) along its course to the sea, is not open to applications for Sheep or Cattle Runs, but is so to applicants for Rural Land, according to Government Regulation?, in the biock above delineated.
