GIBBSTON SCHOOL CONCERT

A concert in aid of the funds of the local school took place at Qibbston on Friday evening last, Despite the fact that the night was wet and stormy, there was a very large attendance, those present including a number of visitors from Arrowtown and Cromwell. An excellent programme was presented, and, under the capable stage manage meat of Mies Ridley the entertainment went with a swing from start to finish. Encore numbers were not permitted, and there was no delay between the items, The songs, recitations and sketches contributed by the pupils of the school were a feature of the concert, and were greatly appreciated by the audience. Probably the most popular children’s items were the action song “ Babbles ” by Annie Cowan and the duet “I Don't Want To Play In Your Yard ” by Jean and Esme Cowan. The other items given by the children were as follows: Opening chorus, “Welcome”, pupils; recitations by Joan and Annie Cowan, Robbie Scott, Willie Reid, Alex Miller and Harry Perriam ; dialogue, Esme Cowan and Harry Perriam. The remainder of the concert portion of the programme was as followsßecitation, “ The Bush Christening”, Mr Jos Kirby; song, “ Waikiki Moon ”, Miss D Cowan ; song, “ Hame O’ Mine”, Mrs A W Scott; comic song, “I’m Getting Better Every Day”, Mr J Pearce (Cromwell); song, Queen of the Earth ” Miss Eoright; song, “ Granny’s Song At Twilight ", Miss J$ Ridley ; recitation “ As My Mother Used To Dj ", Mr R Bowie (Cromwell); illustrated tableau, “ The Miner’s Dream cf Home,” Mr J Fitzgerald (soloists Mrs Scott and Mr T Scott); recitation, “ The 'Ole In The Road”, Mr J Pearce; song, “ Murray Moon ”, Miss Ridley ; duel, Lullaby land ”, Misses H Kinross and D Cowan; pianoforte duet, “ Gibbston Gavotte ”, Misses Ridley and Scott. The entertainment con eluded with a comedietta entitled “ A

Marriage Of Convenience **• irbioh wa» presented by the Qibbskm Dramatic Club The play was adequately staged* and all tbe characters were capably sustained. Tbe cast was as follows: — Mrs Miven, Miss H Kinross ; Hannah, Miss B Kinross; Mrs Bellamy, Mice Enright; Miss Carrutfaers, Miss Bessie Scott; Miss Twangles, Miss Leslie ; Mr Twangles, Mr J Kirby; Rev Golightly, Mr T Scott; Waters, Mr G Enright. The accompaniments to tbe concert items were played by Misses Bowie (Cromwell), Kinross, Ridley, and Scott.

At tbe conclusion of the concert Mr F- C Perriam, chairman of tbe School Committee, thanked tbe performers for their assistance and tboea present for their attendance.

The entertainment was followed by a dance, which was largely attended. Mr G Enright acted as M.C. and tbe music was supplied by tbe ladies. An excellent sapper was provided.
