FOOTBALL.

Notes on the Play.

Arrow v. Glenorohy.

The return match between teams from Arrow and Glenorchy Football Clubs took place on the local Recreation Ground on Saturday last. The previous match had been won by Qlenorehy by a small margin, and a good deal of interest was taken in Saturday’s game, the attendance of the public being the largest of the season.. The weather was fine and the ground in capital order. Arrow kicked off and after an exchange of kicks between the backs Morgan got possession and carried the ball to the Arrow twenty-five. Fletcher relieved, and Partridge had a chance of scoring but overran the ball The Glenorchy forwards took the ball down the field and a period of even play followed. Eventually the ball went out to Morgan, who kicked high, and Qarforth failing to take the ball, the speedy Glenorchy five-eighths, dashed up and scored. No goal retailed. 80. A fine passing run in

j which Carter, Fletcher, 0. Edie, and took part, broke down near ifae Glenorohy line, the visitors being penalised. Fletcher’s kick fell short. Rbortly afterwards faulty play by the ' Arrow backs gave Glenorchy a chance and Morgan ran through and scored. The same player added the major points. 80. Arrow now rallied, and after a good passing run, Fletcher was pushed into touch near the Gienoroby line. Shortly afterwards the Arrow forwards dribbled over and Hunter scored. Fletcher failed with (he kick, 8 3 For the remainder of the spell the home team held the upper hand Forbes scored near the corner, and Partridge made a fine attempt at goal. 8-6. The Arrow backs now opened up the game and Carter, Partridge, 0. Edie, and Fletcher were prominent in several passing runs, one of which ended in Partridge scoring behind the posts. The same player kicked a goal and half-time was called with Arrow leading by three points. Arrow forced down early in the second spell, and for some time play was fairly even. The best passing run of the match, in which Dakers, Carter. 0 Edie, Partridge, and E. Edie bandied the ball, was stopped by Morgan, who cut in and kicked well down the field. Good play by Jaokways and Forbes placed Glecoreby again on the defensive, and Dabers was nearly over. A force down relieved the visitors, and (be kick out was not returned, Glenoroby assuming the attack. From a scrum near the line A, Sutherland scored in a -good position, but Morgan failed with the kick, 11-11. Thornton and Harris prominent in another attack on the Arrow line, but Dakers and Fletcher relieved Shortly afterwards the Arrow backs got out of position and Morgan following up a long kick picked up and

scored a very soft try. No goal resulted. 1411. The. visitors then began to tire, and the Arrow players, urged on by their supporters soon placed the issue beyond doubt. Fletcher got over but was pushed back, and a scrum was ordered, from which the ball again went to Fletcher, who scored. Partridge kicked a goal, and the score read —Arrow 16, Glenorohy 14. Arrow continued to press, and Partridge placed a goal from a penalty. 19-14. Shortly before the call of time Dakers passed to Carter, who scored a clever try, which was not Converted, and the final scores were : Arrow ... -22 points Glenorohy ... 14 points

Despite the fact that occasionally the play was more or lees " ragged ” the spectators were treated to an ißtsresting and exciting game. Thirty-six points were scored and although Arrow won by a good margin, the result was in doubt until well through the second spell. The Glenorchy team comprised a likely look ing lot of players, but there were one or two obvious “ passengers,” and towards the close of the game the men who had borne the brunt of the game tired visibly- With practice and experience the team should be able to bold its own with either Queenstown or Arrow, and next season *Glenorchy will probably play an important part in the Lake County competitions Morgan was the mainstay of the Glenorchy. back division, bis running kicking and tackling being of a high order. Thornton was the best of the other backs, while Harris and . Sutherland appeared to be the best of the forwards.

Individually the Arrow backs appeared to play well, but the majority of the passing runs broke down at the crucial moment, while the three quarters showed a tendency to get out of position. The forwards all played well, and more than held their own against their heavier opponents. Mr Shapd (Queenstown) acted as referee, and gave every satisfaction in that capacity, The visitors were the guests of the home team at lunch and tea at the Central Hotel.
