PEACE CELEBRATIONS AT GIBBSTON.

A Successful Gathering.

Owing to various adverse circumstances the residents of Giboston were unable to fittingly celebrate (be signin" of the Peace Treaty on the day appointed by the Government, and the celebrations were postponed until Friday last. The arrangements made by tha committee included a picnic and sports gathering in the afternoon, and a concert and dance in the evening, both functions being very largely attended. The picnic was held in the school grounds, and attracted quite a number of visitors from Arrow, Crown Terrace, and other parts of the district. The day was fine, and although a cold wind slightly marred the pleasure of those present, both old and young appeared to spend an enjoyable day. The local school committee assumed charge of the proceedings during the day, and uuder the direction of the chairman (Mr James Leslie) and the teacher (Miss Gray) the children even well catered for. Sports and games of all descriptiona were in full swing throughout the day, and an abundance of refreshments was supplied. Several events for adults were also deoided, and the motor-car driving competitions aroused considerable interest. The competition for ladies attracted three entries and was won by Miss B. Kinross, while Mrß. Soctt was awarded first place in the men's competition. A ship's quoits waa won by Mr J. Wilcox, and Mr 0. Thomson secured firafc prize in a football-kicking event.

In the evening the school was orowded to the doors, and during the ,. ooncert many were unable to obtain ad- ▼ mission. Mr James Leslie presided, and the programme opened with a pianoforte duet by the Misses Kinross. Songs were contributed by Miss L. Entight, " The Bells of St. Mary's " ; Mr R. Cowan, "BiUo"; Mrs Soott, " Rackety Coo "; Rev. J. Rattray, "When There's Love at Home' Miss Qwen Preston, " Destiny"; Miss Ethel Mayne, "The Rose of No Man's Land." The instrumental items were a cornet solo by the Rev. J. Rattray and a violin solo by Mr F. Chard. The concert concluded with a very amusing come' diatta entitled " Household Troubles," in which the characters were sustained as follows: —Mrs Juvenile, Miss H. Kinross; Harry, Mr G. Enright; Mr Le Grand, Mr W. Leslie; Mrs Le Grand, Miss C. Enright; Cook, Miss I. Bremner; Mary, Miss B. Kinross ■ Jane, Miss M. Perriam; Kate, Miss M. Gray; Smiler, Mr B. Scott; Buttons, Master T. Scctt.

A dance followed, the music being supplied by Mr S Stevenson (violin) and Miss K Stevenson (pianoj, whiie Mr G. Enright acted as M.C. An ex. cellout supper was provided bj the

local ladies, and prior to the break-up of the gathering Mr D. Maoleod thanked the Gibbston people for the hospitality that had been extended to the visitors from Arrow.
