PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

Public Meeting. There wag a large attendance at the meeting held in the Council Chambers, Arrowtown, on Friday evening to make final arrangements for peace celebrations. His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Reid) presided. The secretary (Mr J. Forbes) gave an outline of what had been done at previous meetings. It had been decided to hold one day's celebrations, and the sum of £4O had been fixed as the amount to be spent. - Proposed by Mr J. H. Douglas, seconded by Mr Barron —That the celebrations be held on Saturday, 19th July, and that a dance be held on Monday evening, July 21. As an amendment, Mr H. McKibbin proposed, Mr Cotter seconded—That the celebrations be held on July 21. On being put the motion was carried. Mr Barron thought that the committee should arrange for a free picture entertainment for the evening, and the secretary was instructed to interview Mr Tomkies as to the amount he would require. Owing to the uncertainty of the weather, it was decided that the eatables be served in the Garrison Hall Mr Forbes, one of the trustees, intimated that the Hall would be available for the. purpose. It was decided that, if' the weather was suitable, a procession on similar lines to that of Armistice Day be carried out. The procession to start at 10 a.m Returned soldiers to be asked to take part in procession in uniform. Proposed by Miss G. Preston, seconded by Mrs Churchill—That a prize be given for the best decorated vehicle. The motion was carried, and Mrs Forbes and Mr C Ross were appointed judges. Proposed by Mr Ross seconded by Mr Forbes—That a prize be given for the most original contrivance on the ground.—Carried. It was stated that £5 had already been voted for fireworks, and it was decided that if arrangements could not be made for picture entertainment, that a further sum of £5 be spent on fireworks. Mr Ross said that he would give a special prize for an essay on “ A World Peace and how best attained ” The competition to be open to children attending all schools in Arrowtown and district, and essays to be sent in to Secretary not later than 3 p.m- on Monday, 4th August. Mr Ross was thanked and the arranging of Retails was left in the hands of the Mayor, Messrs Ross and Forbes. A vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding terminated the meeting. i Meetings of Committees. Meetings of general, sports, and social committees were held on Monday evening, when it was reported that all arrangements were well in hand. The sports committee have arranged indoor and outdoor programmes. The whole of the celebrations will be carried out at the Garrison Hall. If the day ia fine, the children’s sports will be held on section opposite the hall, and Constable McMahon has kindly given the use of the police station grounds for games, etc. As there was a doubt as to whether Mr Tomkies would be able to give picture entertainment on Saturday evening, it was arranged that the children be entertained in the Garrison Hall on that evening, and that the additional five pounds worth of fireworks be procured if possible. The celebrations will conclude on Monday evening with a plain and fancy •dress ipoial in the Garrison Hall.
