Private Albert Lafranchi, son of Mrs Lafranchi, Cardrona, who came back to New Zealand in the Maunganui, arrived home last week.

Jack's friends here will wish him success in his new occupation. Mr Oswald Edie, son of Mr and Mrs G. S Edie, Glencoe .Station, who returned some months ago from service with the Royal Flying Corps, has been advised that he has gained his commission as a Flight-lieutenant, for which he sat before leaving England. The death took place at Dunedin on Saturday of Mrs Woodhouse, widow of Mr Francis Ellis Woodhouse, Bannookburn. Deceased was 74 years of age. The death took place at Qneenstown on Thursday of Mrs W. McLelland, a very old and respected resident of tha district. Deceased, who had reached the good old age of 87 years, arrived in this district close on 50 years ago. She resided in Arrowtown for a few years, but for over SO years had been a resident of Queenstown. She was twice married, and she is survived by a son (Mr H. Lorden, Queens town), and a daughter (Mrs Bone, Queens town), of her first marriage. The interment took place at Queenstown on Saturday, the burial service being conducted by Rev. R G. Coats, Vicar of Wakatipu. The late Mr A. Soutor, a Central Otago hawker, has bequeathed £I,OOO to the Salvation Army, £l,OlO to Barnado Homes and £I,OOO to the Ross Home, Dunedin. The death of Mrs Falok, relict of . Mr Ferdinand Falok, took place at Christchurch on Sunday, 22nd ult. Mrs Falok, who was in her seventy* fourth year, arrived in Dnnedin from Australia in 1864 and was married the same year, Mr Falok being postmaster at Wetherstones, which in those days was a very busy mining town. A few ' months later the newly-married couple went to Arrowtown, and afterwards lived for many years in Queenstown and Lawrence. Mrs Falok leaves six daughters and three sons. One of the sons (Mr E. One of Southland's best known stock dealers in the person of Mr P. McKinna, who 18 leaving Southland, was entertained by a number of farmers, stock agents and other citizens at Winton recently. The chair was oocupied by Mr John McDonald. Mr J. R. Hamilton presented the guest with a fountain pen. In the couree of his reply Mr McKinna stated that during his 27 years' dealing he had passed a million sheep through his hands, his biggest deal being a 10,000 purchase. At the conclusion of the evening, which was pleasantly interspersed with toasts and musical items, three ringing cheera were given for Mr MoKinna and family. Mr McKinna has on several occasion!

Mr Lusk was bora in Glasgow, and came out to Dunedin in the early sixties. Shortly after his arrival he joined the stall of the Union Bank, eventually attaining the position of accountant, a position he retained for a considerable number of years. He severed his connection with the Bank over 25 years ago, when he acted aa acconntant for Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co. for a number of years. He was also on the staff of the bank at Arrowtown in the early days. Of a quiet, retiring nature, Mr Lusk took no part in public affairs. He was an adherent of the Scotch Episcopalian Church, and attendea All Saints' Church. He was married to Miss Younger, the family comprising three sons and one daughter. The daughter and one son reside in Victoria, one son died in South Africa, and the. remaining son is Mr Lusk, dentist, of Mosgiei ______„
