W, Mcßride wrote asking that property known as Cemetery Hill, at present leased by him from the Council, be transferrad to Thomas Feehly.— The request was granted. The Napier Borough Council forwarded for approval a resolution asking that the Government be urged to declare Anzic Day a statutory holiday. —The resolution was endorsed. The Waihi Borough Council asked endorsement of the following resolution :—"That the Municipal Corporations Act be amended so as to allow payment of not less than £1 Is per day to councillors engaged on borough business." Also that Government be asked to make Saturday the day foe statutory half-holiday.—Received. The balance sheet for year ended March 81, 1919, which had been certified by Auditor-General, was adopted. In accordance with motion tabled by Cr Reid at last meeting, the question of an electric-lighting scheme for the Borough was disoussed. Or Reid said he would like to have the opinion of councillors as to whether it was advisable to go on with the question or drop it. Cr Romans said that personally he was quite agreeable that the question should be gone into, and get to the bedrock of an efficient scheme. They had to consider the cost, and for this he thought they would require expert advice. If it oame within their finances, no doubt it would be a good thing.

Or Stevenson was strongly in favour of electrio-lighting, and considered that if it could be installed at a reasonable cost it would be the best asset the Council would have. Power was to be bad in several places. Besides the Arrow River scheme, he considered that the question of using the town water should be considered. He understood that there was 1$ head of water running to waste there which could be utilised. Then if they wished to go in for a district scheme, sufficient power could be got at the Arrow Falls to light the whole district. He was in favour of getting an expert to report on the matter. Cr Adams was'not in favour of getting an expert as conditions varied at different seasons of the year, and thought it would be much better for councillors themselves to first look in to the matter of the town water supply. He was not against the scheme if it - could be installed at a reasonable cost. Eventually it was resolved that Org Adams, Stevenson, and the Clerk be a ccmmittee to go into the question of the Bush Creek scheme, and report as to the avfti' ,Me water there. It was rej.- -ted that the timber for box on towii race had been procured, and the work would be carried out. Other repairs required for the raoa

were mentioned, and it was agreed that the Works Committee should visit the race and have any necessary work attended to. Cr Romans, for the Works Committee, reported that the section at ceinetery had been fenced; the trees in Atheneum ground, complained of by Mrs Graham at last meeting, hadl been inspected, and it had been Jacided that these should be removed ; and repairs to Merioneth street would be attended to as soon as pc?sible. Accounts amounting to £43 10s M w ,.re passed for payment leaving a credit balance of £B7. _ Cr Stevenson said complaints had been made that the street lamps had not been lit on recent dark nights. It was stated that no kerosene was |o be had in town. In reply to Cr Dunlop, as to why the Coronation acetylene lamp was not used, the Olerk said that carbide was not procurable. t Cr Johnston thought that the Council should purchase kerosene in bulk 80 as to provide against a shortage. Cr Dunlop agreed, and on the motion of Cr Johnston, seconded by Cr Dnnlop, the Clerk wbs instructed to get quotation" from looal and Inver cargill firms for kerosene in half-ton _ Cr Johnston drew attention to the * fact that the water was running to waste in a section occupied by Mr Jopp, but no action was taken. Or Romans said that he had agreed to take the position of Acting Mayor until the present meeting, and as he did not have the time to devote to the position, he would like the Council to appoint Borne other member to the position. " On the motion of Or Reid, seconded by Cr Romans, Cr W. Stevenson was appointed Acting Mayor. The lattet said he would only agree to take the poaition for a short time. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
