WAKATIPU LICENSING MEETING.

He had always taken great interest in the licensing work of the distract, and in the name of the Committee he wished to express to the public their sincere sympathy with them in the loss they had sustained. RAILWAY HOTEL, RIVERSDALE In connection with the application of William Kelly for a renewal of his publican’s license for the Railwav Hotel, Riversdale, the chairman said the Committee wanted some assurance that something would be done in the matter of rebuilding. It w*as nearly 15 mjonths since the hotel was burned down and Mr Kelly had been Mr D. Cochrane, Gorew for aptroated very considerate, plicant stated that It was purposed putting up a house of 16 rooms, plans for which were drawn (produced). The cost of everything, however, was so prohibitive at present and the quality of many of the requisites so poor t’ 1 ' 1 ' applicant was anxious to defer bui'-ii sg until the prices came down a bit. Moreover, he did not want to proceed with the erection of the new hotel until the poll on the licensing question was taken iu December, as he might be ruined. Should continuance be carried ’he would undertake to proceed at once with the building. Inspector Fouhy remarked that Mr Keliy had l ad a lot of from th«l committee, but the police were prepared to let thy matter stand till after the election, with the stipulation that the erection of the building be commenced in the first week in January. The Chairman reiterated that “mercy had been, strained” in the latitude allowed f Mr Kelly. The Committee sympathised with him but had a duty to perform in the administration of the Licensing Act. They were strongly of opinion that Mr Kelly should give some indication 01 building before the next quarterly meeting. After further short discussion the Committee retired in order to talk the matter over and give a pronouncement. On their returning to their scats the chairman said the Committee had decided to, adjourn the matter till the September mocking when the license would be renewed provided Mr Kelly had commenced building operations. These would have to be carried out according to plans, though not in their entirety—thei Act stipulated G rooms exclusive used by the family. The police would report at the September* meeting. GLENOROHY HOTEL . The chairman said it was a pity the police report was not altogether favourable in respect of certain things The new licensee seemed to bo conducting the hotel reasonably well. He must remember hel was legally responsible for the conduct of the house. Application ’ granted. NEVIS HOTEL. The application of William P. Robertson for a renewal of accommodation license for above hotel was adjourned till the September meeting as the Committee had to be satisfied that the conditions of Section 7. pf the Act had been complied with. i JIT. The Committee stated that when licensed houses were situated in villages or towns where there was adequate street lighting the licensees would bo permitted to extinguish lights at 10 p.m. The Committee’s definition of “adequate” was confined to electric or gas lighting. In all other cases lights must be kept burning all night. The Committee had no power under the Act to exempt these. COMMENDATION:.. At the conclusion of the meeting the Chairman said he wished to remark on behalf of the Committee that the licensees of the district had carried out their duties under the Licensing Act with a certain degree efficiency, and they (the Committee) were pleased to note that during the year the convictions and police objections had been few. It was hoped this condition of allairs Would long continue.
