PEACE MEMORIALS.

The Minister of Internal Affairs has circularised local bodies intimating that the Government has decided to introduce legislation renewing the provisions of sections 30 of the Appropriation Act, 1918, authorising local authorities to expend moneys for peace memorials,

and enabling local authorities to borrow moneys for peace memorials, subject to a poll of ratepayers. The following, the communication adds, are considered suitable objects on which moneys may be expended : Town halls, libraries, swimming baths, fountains, avenues of trees, band rotundas, parks, recreation grounds, statues. The Minister states that it is not intended that these regulations will alter the Government’s decision not to givs subsidies on moneys raised for permanent memorials.
