London, Aug. 24. Sir Douglas Haig reports fierce fighting southward of Lens. Paris, Aug. 24. The Germans have been ordered to hold Lens at all costs. Its fall is inevitable. Rome, Aug. 24. The Austrian resistance is stubborn along the whole front, but they are losing ground. An official report says : We carried new positions and repulsed violent counter attacks. Our prisoners now number 20,000 men and 500 officers, and we have captured 60 guns. The battle is continuing. The Italians have 9000 guus.
The Rumanians are fighting deeperately, but the enemy is slowly advancing. Russia has not yet resumed her offensive, but preparations for it are in progress. America has loaned Russia £20.000,000.
