CASUALTIES.
While riding homo from school on Monday two children of Mr Lovell, Hawera, aged 8 and 5 years, were thrown from a pony which bolted. Both received injuries to their heads. Tho younger boy took a bad turn on Wednesday, was operated on on tho same evening, and died on Friday morning. The elder child is progressing satisfactorily. A child named Irene Dolsie M‘Cabe died in the Auckland Hospital as the result of scalds. The mother of the child stated at tho inquest that she was lifting a pot of boiling soup off tho fire, and accidentally spilt some on tho baby, who was playing with a toy on tho floor. An old man employed at Stoopbank had a startling experience tho other day, writes a correspondent to the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Ho had been out shooting rabbits with a pea-rifle, and carried tho cartridges loose in his pocket. When ho got home ho was having a smoke, when an explosion occurred, and the pipe was blown from bis mouth and a cartridge went through tho iron roof. The cartridge had got into his pipe when in his pocket,' and ho had not noticed it when putting the tobacco in it. The old fellow got a terrible fright, hut, fortunately, escaped without injury.
