MINING.

Good progress is being made in the sejveral mining ventures in the district. In sluicing the various claims at Skippers are being worked full time, and a successful season is' anticipated. In one or two instances the gold yields from this quarter have been exceptionally good, and future prospects are decidedly bright. It is said Mr Helms and Smith Bros have purchased Mr J. Davis' claim at Upper Shotover. The yield from this property is said to have been highly payable, and the purchasers would appear to have a good property. Mr J. Tripp is busily engaged taking quartz out of the Shotover mine, and the stone is most encouraging. Mr A. Hamilton, manager of the Shamrock Company, is having necessary work done so as to be in readiness for the erection of the plant. It will be a month or so yet before the first consignment of pipes will arrive from the successful contractors, Messrs A. and T. Burt. As a sequel to the abandonment of the application for power rights at Toroha, two 40-head rights were applied for at Hokitiki in the same locality lor the purpose of bringing water on to trio Kimu goldfield by means of a gravitation scheme, at an estimated cost of £150,000. In connection with the water power regulations, the county chairman has suggested, through the members for Westland, that the Government should set up a board of experts in alluvial gold mining to review the present regulations as far as the same effect the mining industry, with a view to making them fair to mining and attractive to capital.
