"Life."

It was a great Kittle that was fought for tnc Davis Cup, the pride <>!' the lawn-tennis world, during the last week in November,

when the champions of America and Australasia, met on the lawns ol the Victorian Association iu Melbourne. How strenuous was the light may l>e judged from the magnificent set of pictures iu the January issue of •• Life." certainly the host snapshots published anywhere ..1 the -.(real contest. What the Davis Cup Competition is, and who the men are that played for it, are told briefly and clearly, and with.the photographs make one of the child' items in a very fine issue of this popular magazine. Among other articles of special interest and value are, " The Opening of the Modern Aladdin's Cave." by Dr Kit< lie.tt : " The Story of Standard' Oil," by John- D. Rockefeller; '■ Dooley on the Spirit of Christmas," by Finloy Peter Dunne; and " How We Spent Christmas with the Crocodiles,"' by Julian A. Dimock. Mr T. K. Dow, who is nothing if not intensely patriotic, shows in a series of maps and diagrams how Australasia corners tho summer at Christmas time, and points out that whilst the northern pari- of the world lies unproductive in tbo grip of winter, we of the southlands are rejoicing in a time of harvest. Mr Dow makes some interesting comparison between the climate of Canada and Australia, greatly to the advantage of the latter. W. A. Somerset, who related a number of interesting stories of submarine diving in a recent number, continues his stories telling, this time, a number of thrilling tales of tragic happening j beneath the waves. On the fiction , side i there is naturally a very strong Christmas flavor, the short stories being strong and wholesome. The fascinating series of Van Dusen detective stories is continued with the unravelling of the mystery of " The Fatal Cipher." When it is said that the ordinary departments are more than usually bright and informative, it will be understood that the January issue of " Life „ is a magazine to be sought for and kept.
