SPORTING NOTES.

—i [By "Peeping Tom."]

It is open to question whether the management of the Dunedin Jockey Club are .acting wisely in delaying the publication of tho weights for the Cup and Publican's Handicap until after the midsummer meeting at Christchurch. For a number of years past no very sensational porformor has captured the Midsummer Handicap, form displayed at Christchurch by the winner of the Dunedin Cup of 1906 and this year was really too bad to be true and altogether misleading to the Handi-o-ipper. Nothing tends more to make a race-meeting successful than arousing the J attention of the race going public and keeping their minds in touch with coming events. In my opinion, it would be better for the huccobs of the D.J.C. Autumn meeting if the weights and acceptances •were made known a week or ten day's earlier. It would give layers a better chance of getting round with double event books, and perhaps arouse more interest amongst speculators all round. It would also be a convenience to some investors if a double machine Cup and Publican's, were opened at Wingatui for the next Cup meeting, more especially now that the Club's secretary does not receive investments by wire on race days. The Central Otago Ttotting Club will hold its annual race meeting at Blacks on Friday, March 15th. A very fair programme has been prepared. The nominations received for the different events are not numerous, but there are amongst them some very fast trotters so that visitors to the meeting may rest assured of being able to enjoy a good day's sport. It is a pity that the Wanaka meeting follows so close upon the Black's fixture. Owners and their horsos assisting at the Black's meoting have very little time to get to Wanaka for the races on Saturday, 16th March. If some of the owners come along they must leave their horses behind them which means inconvenience and expense. There are one or two trots worth picking up at Wanaka, if only to pay for the winter| oats. Next year it is to be hoped! that these two Clubs will so arrange their dateß aa to allow of owners who desire to patronize both meetings having ample time to travel from one to the other. At the Victorian Racing Club's meeting the results were:—Hopeful Stakes— Verenice 1, Miss Malster 2. St. Leger Stakes—Poseidon 1, Booran 2. Newmarket Handicap—Ebullition 1, North Head 2, Collarat 3; won by a neck. Sires' Produce Stakes—Tangaroa 1, Scobio 2. Essendon Stakes—Dividend 1, May King 2.
