New Zealanders do well
In the Warrnamlx>ol-Melbourne cycle road race J). Riley (28 mins.) finished first ; A. Birch, N.Z. (24 min.) second ; A. ilumni, N.Z. (2-1 min.) third. Mehrtens, N.Z (1.0 min.) made the fastest lime --Sin's .*),') mins.
Two liumlred and six started from Warinambn ■.]. The road was sticky and the greasy going caused numerous falls, Untidy sustaining painful inju.ies. Boyce (N.Z.) linished seventli and Uugeis ninth.
Several thousands witnessed the finish. Tin: riders were so mud-covered that itwas difficult to distinguish them. For the lirst sixty miles I here was no wind, it then came strong from the side. The weather conditions early dissipated any hopes of the scratch men overhauling the front rankers. Mehrtens' performance in finishing eleventh from the ten minutes start is considered exceptionally good. The winner, liiley, had to dismount three times. Unco a piece of glass cut a large slice out of a tyre. hut a bicyclist who was watching the race took oll'liis tyre ami gave it to Riley who got going after a delay of live minutes.
