VESUVIUS IN ERUPTION.

A Terrible Visitation. 500 Perish, Ottaiano has baon destroyed. Tho rain of sand continues. The panic is terrible and great destitution exists on all sides. King Emmanuel and Queen Helena have contributed £4OOO in relief. Further violent explosions havo occurred, and there are strong disturbances in the interior of the mountain. Lava is again flowing toward Pompeii, and their is a downpour of ashes in tho districts surrounding the volcano. King Edward has sent a message to King Emmanuel expressing his deep sympathy with the sufferers. A total of 500 persons perished in Ottaiano and San Guiseppe. Tho volcano is now actb'o in the direction of Cercola. A shower of sulphur fell on San Guiseppe, Vesuriani and Ottaiano, and a shower of reddish sand for several hours ; at Naples in the evening ashes were thickest

Tone del Heed and Torrio Annuziata are both isolated and numbers, including British and German journalists, are unable to leave.

A French squadron has been sent to Naples to assist in tho rescue of sufferers. The fugitives number 12,000. A terrible hurricane, accompanied by torrents of water and showers of red hot stones the size of eggs compelled the abandonment of Terredolgrcio.

Complete darkness enshrouds Sangennaro, whero numerous fatalities havo occurred. Sarno is buried in ashes. Most of the residents escaped.
