Of the rare and strange animals now inhabiting the'earth the thylacines of 'Tasmania, commonly known as the Tasmanian wolf, are among the most .singular in appearance and habits. They have been almost exterminated. if not quite, by Tasmanian sheep farmers, whoso folds they i ravage. They are represented in the Zoological Gardens in London by a single living specimen. 'The thylacine looks like a cross between a wolf and a hyena, but it has tiger-like stripes on its back and bind quarters, and belongs to the marsupials, like the kangaroo, flat whereas the kangaroo feeds on vegetables, the thylacine is carnivorous. When Europeans first settled in Tasmanian thylacines wore very common :n the rocky and mountainous districts, but they are not now found in any other part of the world.
