THE LICENSING ACT.
Afc Christchurch on Monday Major Kaddell, S.M., gave his reserved judgment in the case of the Sumner publican charged with selling liquor on Sunday to a bona fide traveller. He said—“l am of opinion that, under the law as it now stands, a traveller cannot demand or be supplied with liquor during the time in which licensed premises are directed to bo closed.” Defendant was convicted and fined the nominal sum of £1 and costs, without endorsement. Defendant will appeal Charges against 11 men of having been on licensed premises during the time hey should have been closed, wese dismissed. Tie defence was that they were bona fide travellers, and the Magistrate held that the law, as it at nresent stood, contained no penalty for genuine travellers being on licensed premises, Halliday, licensee of. the Wellington hotel, was convicted of permitting drunkenneess on 28th December, and fined £3 without endorsement
