St. Petersburg has the highest death-rate of any European capital. 4. Jn dry air sound travels 1,142 ft. per second ; in water, 4,900 ft. ; in iron, 17,500 ft. —»K— Copenhagen has a larger deer park than any city in the world. Jt covers an area of 4,200 acres. * Silk is the only fabric used in the manufacture of garments in Madagascar, as it is cheaper than linen in Ireland. * * More than ten per cent, of articles stolen are purses. Three-quarters of the purses stolen are the property of ladies. * The biggest petition ever presented to Parliament was the Chartists' petition in 1848. It bore 5,706,00 V signatures. Gold is 19 times heavier than the same bulk of water ; silver is ten times, and iron seven times as heavy as water. * The English sovereign was tirst coined in 1626. Previous to that date the noble, value 155., was the valuable British coin. * The highest British rainfall recorded was at Seatliwaite in 1889, when 208 in. fell. The number of rainy days in that year was 217. * The largest cheese ever made was 6ft. lOin. in diameter and 21ft. in circumference. It was made at the Ingersoll factory, in Canada, and weighed 7,0001b5. By a decision of the Russian Government any university or high school student who creates or causes disorder shall be drafted into the army for a period of from one to three years. * A tramp's minimum income is over live shillings a day. At least, a tramp has declared in court that he did a bad day's work if he could not find sixty persons to give him a penny. * No force in nature except lightning entirely disintegrates the body that it kills. A stroke may literally tear a man to .pieces as a bomb would. Yet so intense is the force that the skin of the body may be left without the slightest abrasion. * The most northern newspaper in the world is published at Hammerstein, Russia. The editorial work is done in a small wooden house roofed with turf. The paper is called the "Nordkap," and is published weekly.
